Electronic Instruments Drift in More Than One Function

A modern field instrument may measure or source voltage, current, resistance, frequency, pressure, temperature, or process signals. Passing one function does not prove the other ranges and modes remain within specification.

Calibration should match how the instrument is used. A meter used for low-resistance troubleshooting may need different attention from a process calibrator used to source 4-20 mA signals or simulate temperature sensors.

The Comparison Must Be Better Than the Instrument Under Test

Calibration compares the instrument with reference standards whose values and uncertainty are known. The laboratory must have suitable capability across the required range; a result near the edge of tolerance deserves more care than a simple pass sticker suggests.

As-left data confirms condition after adjustment. Keeping both sets allows managers to see stability, refine calibration intervals, and identify models or environments that produce repeated problems.

Range and Resolution Should Match the Application

An instrument may be accurate enough at one point and unsuitable at another. Calibration points should cover the functions and ranges that matter to the customer’s work, especially where field acceptance limits are narrow. Resolution, stability, and measurement uncertainty all influence whether the tool can support the decision.

Customers with specialized use should provide requirements instead of assuming a standard certificate covers them. Examples include a frequently used low-current loop range, a particular thermocouple type, or a resistance range used for protective equipment. Clear requirements let the laboratory confirm capability before the due date is at risk.
