High Voltage Hot Stick Testing for Utility and Facility Crews

High-voltage work leaves very little room for assumptions. Hot stick testing helps remove one of those assumptions before the job begins by evaluating whether an insulated tool remains suitable for service.

Why the Safety Margin Matters

When to Remove Equipment From Service

A damaged or questionable hot stick should be tagged and removed from service, not simply wiped down and reused. Conditions that deserve attention include cracks, gouges, worn surfaces, loose hardware, moisture exposure, contamination, impact damage, or an unauthorized repair.

Tools should also be removed when identification or testing records cannot be verified. It is usually less disruptive to address a concern during planned work than after a crew has arrived for an outage or emergency call.

Storage and Handling Between Uses

Clean, dry storage helps protect fiberglass surfaces between inspections. Storage tubes, racks, and cases should protect tools from moisture, chemicals, direct sunlight, abrasion, and impact without bending or compressing them.

Cleaning products and repair methods should be appropriate for the tool. Unapproved solvents, abrasives, coatings, or field repairs may damage the surface or conceal a defect.

Making the Program Easier for Crews to Follow

Each tool should have an identifier connected to its inspection, repair, and testing history. Keeping reports in one location makes it easier to review previous findings and identify tools approaching their next service date.

A useful report should include the tool type, manufacturer, length, identification number, inspection findings, work performed, test result, and final status. It should clearly state whether the tool passed, failed, requires repair, or must remain out of service.
